Gordon Mathews, Professor of Anthropology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, talks about his newest publication, The World in Guangzhou: Africans and Other Foreigners in South China’s Global Marketplace. The book is based on ethnographic research conducted in Guangzhou between 2012 and 2014. It tells the story of Guangzhou’s transformation and place in “low-end globalization,” but focuses on the contributions of different groups of foreigners, especially entrepreneurs from Africa.
