Paul Henry Bischoff

Professor Bischoff’s lecture aims to give students an overview of South Africa’s media. He begins by describing the five major “opinion makers” in South Africa today, which are the Mail and Guardian, City Press, Sunday Times, Business Day and Daily Maverick. The fact that only 14% of the media companies are owned by black people and 4.4% have women as their top decision-makers makes the South African government think that the media industry needs to be transformed. The three vehicles driving transformation include Affirmative Action, Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Employment Equity Targets, which the professor further elaborates during his lecture. The contest and competition between the media and state reveal the tension between the economic and political elites in the country. Borrowing Herman Wasserman’s point of view, Bischoff highlights three key trends of South Africa’s media today: as the media becoming a political player, turning towards tabloidization and being structurally transformed by globalization.
